Emotions, What Are They?
It is really strange that we know about emotions, we define them in terms commonly understood, yet are they really deciphered? This is the question that is keeping me engaged these days. In order to know more about its traits, I read the basics of neurosciences, ancient Indian aesthetic theories (which is research field too) and a bit of philosophy that talks about aesthetics. To my surprise, they all talk about how emotions are universal and not cultural specific, what are the various elements that constitute them but no body knows why we feel them, why is it so that human beings not only experience them but have ascribed various names to them. Are they experienced by animals also because they also have passion to strive? How do they express themselves or communicate their feelings in absense of the language?
Really strange, but this is something which is so unique and beautiful . . . .

very thoughful post u did here :)
well, i'd say that all living being - humans, animals and even plants- hv emotions and they feel it too. they just beg to differ in terms of expressing their emotions.
humans r ,no doubt, gifted with a language to express themselves.
animals also communicate to us and tell us whether they r happy or angry... how a pet dog curls up around ur feet and wags it tail when its happy to see u? :)
as for trees, i believe, they also express themselves; shading off their flowers and fruits, swaying with breeze and glow greener with morning dew/rains is something which may hv a scientific explaination to it , but it doesnt deny the fact that plants too feel :)
I agree to what Mayuri said but at the same time I feel that now a days people live more in passions and rarely feel emotions. As positive emotions are needed in life so are the negative ones needed to make distinction between good and bad things. It entirely depends upon us WHAT WE DO WITH OUR FEELINGS!! But generally we blame others for what we feel be it good or bad!!
